The fourth season of The Witcher premieres on Netflix on October 30, and Liam Hemsworth will portray Geralt in place of Henry Cavill. The replacement of the lead actor became one of the series’ most discussed topics. Although Cavill never stated a single definitive reason for his exit, the evidence points to creative differences with the production team.
It is reported that the actor — a devoted fan of Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels and CD Projekt RED’s games — was dissatisfied with the show’s creative direction. As early as 2021, showrunner Lauren Hissrich revealed that Cavill frequently sent the team comments about Geralt’s lines.
“Many of the notes he sent concerned Geralt — he wanted the character to speak more. Henry observed that in the books we spend a lot of time inside the character’s head, so he was curious about how to translate that to the screen.”
The actor later confirmed:
“All my requests and suggestions came down to one thing: remaining faithful to the books. That has always been my priority.”
In his farewell statement Cavill wrote:
“My time as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with monsters and adventures, but the moment has come to put down the medallion and the swords. The role of the White Wolf will be taken on by the talented Liam Hemsworth. I pass the torch with respect and look forward to seeing how he will interpret this extraordinarily complex character.”
Seasons four and five, filmed back-to-back, will serve as the series finale and cover Sapkowski’s final books — Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and The Lady of the Lake.
