Every year, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) publishes its Global Artist Chart, a definitive ranking of the world’s most successful recording acts. In the most recent report, Taylor Swift reclaimed the top spot, bolstered by the record-breaking success of The Life of a Showgirl. However, amidst a roster dominated by global household names like Bad Bunny, Drake, and Stray Kids, one Japanese ensemble has made a remarkable impression: MGA, internationally recognized as Mrs. GREEN APPLE, secured an impressive No. 13 ranking.
The band’s dominance extends to the IFPI’s Global Album Chart. Their 10th-anniversary retrospective, 10, earned a spot in the top ten, while also performing exceptionally well across both physical sales and global streaming platforms. This dual success highlights the group’s profound resonance with listeners, transcending language barriers to capture a worldwide audience.
The album 10 serves as a comprehensive showcase of the band’s creative evolution. It features chart-topping anthems like “Lilac,” which dominated the Billboard Japan year-end song charts, and “Darling,” the track that secured the group their third consecutive Grand Prix at Japan’s most prestigious music awards. Furthermore, the viral success of “Dance Hall” and its intricate choreography solidified their status as cultural icons. With over 16 billion cumulative streams in Japan alone, the band has firmly cemented its place in modern pop history.
Since their major-label debut in 2015, MGA has redefined the scope of a contemporary rock band. Frontman Motoki Ohmori has become a singular force in the industry, noted not only for his soaring vocal range and profound songwriting but also for his prowess as a multi-disciplinary performer. By seamlessly integrating theatrical staging, dance, and television hosting into their repertoire, the band has cultivated a unique connection with fans, fostering a community that feels both intimate and expansive.
The trio functions as a creative powerhouse: Motoki Ohmori acts as the visionary producer, consistently topping composition and lyricist charts; guitarist Hiloto Wakai provides the technical precision that defines their signature sound; and keyboardist Ryoka Fujisawa contributes the atmospheric textures and versatile instrumental depth that distinguish their arrangements.
The past year was a landmark period for the band, celebrated under the banner “MGA MAGICAL 10 YEARS.” The highlight was their massive five-dome stadium tour, “BABEL no TOH,” which sold out 550,000 tickets across 12 electrifying nights. As they venture into their next chapter, marked by the release of a highly anticipated full-length studio album this fall and prominent contributions to national television soundtracks like “Kaze to Machi,” MGA shows no signs of slowing down.
