Wednesday leans harder into horror and bloodshed in season 2, and several characters meet grisly fates by the finale. One notable casualty is Gideon Sterling, the MorningSong cult leader portrayed by Casper Van Dien.

Sterling’s presence had loomed over his stepdaughter Bianca Barclay (Joy Sunday) since season 1, but the character only appears on-screen in the second season. In a tense scene set in Principal Dort’s office (played by Steve Buscemi), the fugitive leader demands money — a confrontation that ends with Dort unleashing his fire powers, immolating Sterling and crudely using the remains as fuel for his fireplace. It’s a brief but brutal turn.

Van Dien said he enjoyed the role despite its short runtime and appreciated the chance to reteam with director Tim Burton — a collaboration he first experienced on 1999’s Sleepy Hollow. He described being honored to work with Burton again and glad to have been part of the show even for a fleeting appearance.

The series blends CGI with practical effects and prosthetics to create its more visceral moments; when asked whether his fiery end was filmed practically or created in post, Van Dien confirmed the sequence relied largely on visual effects. He added that he would have been willing to perform a practical burn had the production requested it, but for the scene he primarily acted and let the VFX team handle the rest.

Van Dien also had to be discreet about his cameo while streaming to his Twitch audience, since fans began speculating about his role after a blurred newspaper image hinted at Gideon Sterling’s appearance earlier in the season.

Though Sterling’s on-screen time is brief, Van Dien suggested the character’s fate might not be definitive — with a director like Burton, unexpected narrative turns are always possible.

Wednesday season 2 is streaming on Netflix.
