While Jack White is renowned for his virtuosic guitar prowess, he took a self-deprecating turn during a recent Saturday Night Live appearance, comically “forgetting” his solo mid-performance for a laugh.
During the April 4 episode hosted by Jack Black, the Detroit-born rocker made a cameo in a pre-recorded segment titled “Words to Live By (Country Song).” The sketch centers on a group of men performing a ballad about profound life lessons—only to realize they can’t quite recall the advice they were given.
The nearly five-minute video begins with James Austin Johnson, sporting a mullet, struggling to remember his father’s deathbed wisdom. The spotlight then shifts to host Jack Black, who, clad in a cowboy hat and wielding an acoustic guitar, attempts to recount a sage’s teachings from a Tibetan cave.
As the sketch nears its climax, Black exclaims, “Jack White, hit ’em with a guitar solo!” The camera cuts to White, dressed in sleek black Western attire and a matching cowboy hat, perched atop a majestic, snow-dusted mountain. As a CGI eagle soars past, White launches into a gritty, country-infused lick before abruptly faltering.
“Wait, wait,” White says, stumbling over the notes with a frustrated grin. “I forgot it. I forgot the f—king solo.”
Beyond his comedic contribution, White served as the night’s musical guest, delivering high-energy performances of his new tracks “Derecho Demonico” and “G.O.D. And The Broken Ribs.” He also surprised the audience during the opening monologue, joining Jack Black and a star-studded group of Five-Timers Club members—including Tina Fey, Jonah Hill, Candice Bergen, and Melissa McCarthy—for a spirited rendition of The White Stripes’ classic “Seven Nation Army.”
This broadcast marked Jack Black’s fifth time hosting the legendary program and White’s sixth appearance as a musical guest, a journey that began with his SNL debut in 2002.
