Valve: New Steam Machine versions will be released faster than Steam Deck

Valve engineers stated that future versions of Steam Machines will follow shorter update cycles than the Steam Deck and its potential successors.

Engineers Pierre-Loup Griffais and Yazan Aldehayyat discussed the update cadence for future Steam Machine models during an interview.

Griffais explained that a Steam Machine does not require the same long lifecycle as a Steam Deck. The Steam Deck launched four years ago, and Valve treats these products differently. The company views the Steam Deck as a console, while it considers the Steam Machine a gaming PC. Because PC hardware offers such a vast range of CPU and GPU configurations, performance requirements for a Steam Machine remain more flexible.

The engineers clarified that no Steam Machine 2 is currently in development, and Valve has no plans to announce one soon. Factors like RAM shortages and the slowing pace of PC hardware releases could shift the release timeline for any future versions.

Aldehayyat added that longer hardware cycles in the general PC market might extend the life of existing Steam Machines. However, he noted that rising performance demands from new Steam games could necessitate faster hardware updates.
