Two Classic Pokémon Titles Are Finally Coming to Nintendo Switch

The definitive 2004 remakes, Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, are officially making their way to the Nintendo Switch. Scheduled for release on Friday, February 27, the launch coincides with Pokémon Day—a date that also marks the 30th anniversary of the franchise’s legendary 1996 debut.

While The Pokémon Company had already slated its annual Pokémon Presents livestream for 9 a.m. EST on the same day, the publisher decided to break the news early after a series of leaks began circulating online. This early confirmation has set the stage for what is shaping up to be a massive celebration for long-time fans.

Breaking from expectations that the titles might join the Nintendo Switch Online library, both games will instead be available as standalone digital purchases for $19.99 each. Fans can already secure their trip back to Kanto by pre-ordering through the eShop. Meanwhile, trainers in Japan will be treated to an exclusive special physical edition, though there are currently no plans to bring this boxed version to Western markets.

FireRed and LeafGreen remain two of the most cherished entries in the series. They successfully modernized the iconic Generation 1 experience with improved aesthetics and mechanics that, for many, represent the quintessential way to catch the original 151 Pokémon. In addition to the nostalgic journey through Kanto, these versions introduced the Sevii Islands—an expansive post-game archipelago filled with high-level challenges and various Pokémon from the Johto region.

The upcoming Pokémon Presents showcase is also expected to provide fresh insights into Pokémon Pokopia, a new life-simulation title that has already hinted at surprising mechanical depth. With the 30th anniversary in full swing, the community is also holding its collective breath for potential news regarding Generation 10 or the long-awaited return to the Unova region through a Generation 5 remake.
