The cooperative side-scrolling action RPG Towerborne is preparing to exit its Early Access phase, with a full 1.0 commercial launch scheduled for next month. Developed by Stoic, the renowned studio behind the critically acclaimed The Banner Saga trilogy, the game marks a significant genre shift for the team.

Revealed during the recent New Game+ Showcase, the title first debuted via Steam Early Access in September 2024, followed by a stint in Xbox Game Preview in April 2025. Towerborne blends high-fantasy aesthetics with the kinetic energy of classic arcade beat ’em ups. Players assume the role of an “Ace,” an undying champion tasked with safeguarding humanity against a creeping corruption while unraveling the secrets of a crumbling metropolis. The gameplay focuses on intricate, combo-driven melee encounters and deep character customization through loot that directly impacts combat styles.

The journey to 1.0 has seen several major fundamental changes. While Towerborne was originally envisioned as an always-online, free-to-play title, Stoic has pivoted to a traditional premium model. The game now supports offline play while maintaining its online cooperative features. Furthermore, the developer has scrapped paid microtransactions; all cosmetic items are now earned purely through gameplay, with an expanded suite of equipment arriving with the full release.

The 1.0 update is substantial, introducing the conclusion of the main narrative, two formidable new bosses, and a variety of fresh player abilities. Players can also test their mettle with a revamped difficulty system that includes a “Brutal” setting for seasoned veterans. The experience is further heightened by an updated world map and a sweeping original score by award-winning composer Austin Wintory.

Towerborne officially arrives on February 26, making its debut on PlayStation 5 alongside the Xbox Series X/S and PC versions. The Standard Edition is priced at $24.99, while a $29.99 Deluxe Edition offers exclusive cosmetic sets and additional crafting materials to jumpstart the adventure.
