Tom Hiddleston Cast in Upcoming Streaming Series Tenzing

Ever since being cast as Loki in the first Marvel Thor movie back in 2011, Tom Hiddleston has maintained a busy schedule in Hollywood. He has appeared in both Marvel and non-Marvel feature films alongside television work. After starring in the Loki series on Disney Plus, he returned for the second season of the British series The Night Manager, which debuted its first season in 2016. Apple TV has now confirmed Hiddleston’s next streaming project.

Hiddleston will co-star in the Apple TV film Tenzing. The biographical movie centers on Tenzing Norgay, the Nepalese Sherpa who guided New Zealand mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary when they became the first men to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Hiddleston plays Hillary, while Chinese actor Genden Phuntsok portrays Norgay. Willem Dafoe plays John Hunt, the British army officer who led the Everest expedition.

“The adventure of a lifetime”

Australian filmmaker Jennifer Peedom directed the movie. Tenzing marks Peedom’s first narrative feature, though she brings extensive mountain-climbing documentary experience to the project. She directed the documentaries Miracle on Everest (2008), Sherpa (2015), Mountain (2017), and Mountain Quest (2021). Production for Tenzing took place around Mount Everest and in the Nepalese city of Kathmandu.

“The extraordinary thing that Jen has done is she’s put us all in the environment,” Hiddleston said in a 2025 interview with Josh Horowitz. “We’ve actually just spent a month in Nepal and I’ve spent some time in the Khumbu Valley and in the foothills of Everest and in the Himalayas.”

Hiddleston described the experience as “the adventure of a lifetime” after nurturing a lifelong personal fascination with Everest.

The film addresses the historical discussion surrounding the final push to the summit. Following the 1953 expedition, speculation persisted regarding who stepped onto the peak first. Western news outlets largely focused on Sir Edmund Hillary, but both men initially declined to name who reached the highest point first. Norgay later revealed that Hillary took the first step onto the summit.

When will Tenzing come to streaming?

Tenzing will receive a theatrical run before streaming on Apple TV. The movie debuts on September 15 at the Toronto International Film Festival. It opens in select theaters on October 9 and arrives on Apple TV a week later on October 16.

Tenzing will be available to stream on Apple TV on October 16.
