As a part of a research to enhance procedural degree era in video games, three researchers have educated a man-made intelligence to make playable maps for traditional Doom. We’re fairly positive that is how Skynet obtained began.

Edoardo Giacomello, Pier Luca Lanzi, and Daniele Loiacono of Cornell University used Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), a category of AI algorithms utilized in unsupervised machine studying. They supplied two of those GANs with topographical options and pictures from over 1000 Doom maps, taken from group websites such because the Video Game Level Corpus on GitHub.
The first GAN was educated with plain degree map pictures, the second with each pictures and “the occupied area, the height map, the walls, and the position of game objects”. They then set each to generate new Doom maps, and it apparently labored. “Our results show that GANs can capture [the] intrinsic structure of Doom levels, and [this] appears to be a promising approach to level generation in first person shooter game.”
As to the standard of the created maps, they declare that “most generated levels have proven to be interesting to explore and play due to the presence of typical features of Doom maps (like narrow tunnels and large rooms)”. Sadly, they haven’t made any of the AI-developed ranges accessible.
