Many of us are still coming to terms with the conclusion of Prime Video’s take on Robert Jordan’s iconic The Wheel of Time series. Showrunner Rafe Judkins crafted a sweeping, visually stunning epic anchored by a phenomenal ensemble cast, leaving many fans wishing it had lasted longer. Fortunately, Amazon’s streaming service is preparing to dive back into the realm of high fantasy with an exciting new venture.

Fourth Wing, the breakout sensation from Rebecca Yarros’ The Empyrean series, is officially in development for the screen. The story centers on Violet Sorrengail, a young woman whose life takes a drastic turn when her stern mother commands her to enroll at the brutal Basgiath War College to train as a dragon rider. The stakes, however, are unforgiving: the academy is a crucible where failing to graduate means losing your life. Suddenly, high school stress seems trivial by comparison.

Though initial development reports surfaced in late 2023, the project gained significant momentum this May during Amazon’s 2026 Upfronts presentation. Meredith Averill, known for her executive work on Netflix’s Wednesday, has been tapped as the showrunner, with Michael B. Jordan joining as an executive producer.

The adaptation is a collaboration between Amazon MGM Studios and Jordan’s production banner, Outlier Society. They will be joined by Yarros herself and Westworld co-creator Lisa Joy to oversee the creative vision.

“I am genuinely thrilled to collaborate with such a dedicated, talented team, and I am deeply grateful for their sincere appreciation of both the novels and the passionate community that supports them,” Yarros shared in a statement to Variety.

“Violet’s journey in Fourth Wing has ignited a global sensation, resonating with millions and fostering an intensely devoted fanbase drawn to its immersive world, compelling characters, and high-stakes emotional narrative,” added Peter Friedlander, Head of Global Television at Amazon MGM Studios. “Rebecca Yarros’ brilliant work is among the most anticipated adaptations in development. With Meredith and our esteemed partners at Kilter, Outlier, and Premeditated, we are committed to bringing this story to life in a way that truly honors what fans cherish most.”

While specific release details remain under wraps, this project offers a refreshing shift from The Wheel of Time. It presents a new opportunity for fantasy enthusiasts, particularly those looking for a fresh direction amidst the ongoing debates surrounding recent supplementary projects within the Wheel of Time franchise.
