As the dust settles over New Vegas and the threat of total war looms, many characters have embarked on perilous new journeys—perhaps even toward the scorched territories of Utah.

Yet, amidst the grand geopolitical shifts, one character’s trajectory remains deeply unsettling. Fans are rightfully questioning the bizarre biological trajectory of a certain squire: What exactly is happening to Thaddeus?

Is Thaddeus Actually Becoming a Ghoul?

From his first appearance, Thaddeus (portrayed by Johnny Pemberton) has endured a relentless string of misfortunes. Initially presented as a cruel foil to Maximus (Aaron Moten) within the Brotherhood of Steel, his character evolved from a generic bully into a tragic companion. After believing Maximus had perished, Thaddeus stepped into the role of squire, forming an unexpected bond with the man he once tormented.

His luck took a disastrous turn when he discovered Maximus’s deception. In the ensuing chaos, Thaddeus suffered a gruesome foot injury, only to be “cured” by a mysterious serum provided by a wasteland wanderer. While the concoction mended his bones, it triggered a terrifying metamorphosis. He exhibited classic ghoul-like resilience—surviving lethal wounds and resisting radiation—which forced him to flee the Brotherhood’s anti-ghoul purges.

However, by the Season 2 finale, Thaddeus’s condition has clearly surpassed standard ghoulification. The appearance of an additional mouth beneath his chin and the sudden, painless loss of an arm suggest something far more alien. Even the Ghoul (Walton Goggins), a veteran of irradiated mutations, reacts to Thaddeus with a look of genuine concern, implying that this transformation is an entirely different breed of horror.

While the show hasn’t explicitly labeled Thaddeus’s condition, the clues point toward a legendary piece of Fallout lore. During Norm MacLean’s (Moisés Arias) investigation of the derelict Vault-Tec headquarters, he stumbles upon a cryptic term: FEV.

Short for the Forced Evolutionary Virus, this bio-agent is a staple of the franchise’s history. Originally designed as a super-soldier program, FEV has been manipulated by various factions—most notably the Enclave and the Master—to create the Wasteland’s most iconic monsters. In the games, FEV is responsible for the creation of Super Mutants, the grotesque Centaurs, and the powerful, telepathic Psykers. By linking “Future Enterprise Ventures” to this virus, the show suggests that Vault-Tec’s endgame involves radical biological engineering.

The Future of Thaddeus in Season 3

Thaddeus’s symptoms don’t perfectly align with a Super Mutant transformation, but they do strongly suggest he has become a host for an FEV strain. Rather than becoming a standard ghoul, he appears to be turning into a hybrid entity—perhaps a version of a Centaur or a unique mutation never before seen in the games. The Ghoul’s silence when questioned about these abnormalities only reinforces the idea that Thaddeus is treading uncharted ground.

The stakes for Season 3 are heightened by Steph Harper’s (Annabel O’Hagan) recent actions.
