Searchlight Pictures has announced the release date for Anna Lee’s Covenant. The period musical will open in limited release in the United States on December 25.
Oscar nominee Amanda Seyfried (Mamma Mia!) plays the lead. This is the actress’s second project following Lionsgate’s The Maid, which is scheduled to be released on the same date.
The film recounts the story of Anna Lee — a real historical figure who founded the Shaker religious movement in the late 18th century. The Shakers were known for their ecstatic dancing during worship.
Anna Lee’s Covenant was directed by Mona Fastvold (The World to Come, The Brutalist). The film premiered in competition at the Venice Film Festival and has been well received by critics (90% on Rotten Tomatoes).
