“The Penguin” May Not Be a Limited Series After All

Cristin Milioti won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series on Sunday for her portrayal of Sofia Gigante, the mafia scion in HBO’s The Penguin — a spinoff of The Batman. That award, however, doesn’t tell the full story: Matt Reeves — the director of The Batman who also executive-produces and supervises writing on The Penguin — told Variety he’s in discussions with showrunner Lauren LeFranc about a second season.

“We love the show and our cast is phenomenal,” Reeves said, praising LeFranc and the writers for their work. He added that the team poured genuine passion into the series and that its reception exceeded their expectations.

The Penguin earned 24 Emmy nominations overall; Milioti’s trophy joined eight Creative Arts Emmys the series received, including the award for Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup for the transformation of Colin Farrell into the disfigured mobster Oswald Cobblepot. Speaking with MTV on the red carpet, Reeves indicated Farrell would be open to returning for a second season, but noted the writers would need to craft a storyline that equals the first season’s stakes—when Oz and Sofia clashed over Gotham’s underworld and a dangerous new drug.

Reeves is primarily focused on The Batman 2, which is slated to begin filming next spring. He lauded Milioti’s work and LeFranc’s interpretation of the character—originally introduced in Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale’s 1997 comic Batman: The Long Halloween—but confirmed Sofia will not appear in the upcoming film because the screenplay was largely finished before Milioti’s role in the series, and the team couldn’t find a natural way to incorporate her into the existing story.

The Batman 2 is scheduled for release on October 1, 2027. In the meantime, fans of Gotham’s rogues gallery can anticipate a Clayface movie directed by James Wilkins, arriving on September 11, 2026.
