The Mummy 4 Sets Release Date and New Title

Mark your calendars because the 27-year-old The Mummy franchise officially returns exactly one year from today. To mark the occasion, Universal Pictures revealed the title for the next movie.

Now called The Mummy: Book of the Dead, the sequel will hit theaters Oct. 15, 2027.

The Mummy: Book of the Dead will reunite Rachel Weisz as Evie Carnahan and Brendan Fraser as Rick O’Connell after Weisz sat out the third film and Evie was recast with Maria Bello. Recent set photos of a very stylish Weisz indicate that Book of the Dead might take place in the late 1950s. Other photos show Fraser’s new look as O’Connell. Now that the official title is public, one major question remains.

Will The Mummy: Book of the Dead rehash Imhotep’s story again?

The first two movies center around the titular mummy Imhotep and his attempts at coming back to life. He is resurrected via the Book of the Dead, so the subtitle for the upcoming film heavily implies he will be a key figure in The Mummy: Book of the Dead.

Oded Fehr is returning as Ardeth Bay, making it seem almost certain that Imhotep will play a role, though official plot details have not yet been shared. Ardeth Bay leads the Medjai, a group of warriors whose whole purpose is to make sure Imhotep stays dead. If Bay is around, someone might be trying to bring Imhotep back to life yet again. Kevin J. O’Connor is reprising his role as Beni for Book of the Dead, so Beni may not be dead after all and could be doing Imhotep’s bidding once more.

Imhotep’s actor Arnold Vosloo has not been officially confirmed to return, but earlier this year John Hannah stated that Vosloo would be back. Audiences will learn more as the release date of The Mummy: Book of the Dead approaches and trailers are released.
