The Madness That Worked: Dispatch Producer Explains the Game’s Success Through an Episodic Model
AdHoc’s executive producer and CEO, Michael Chong, admitted that the choice to release Dispatch in episodes was ‘insane’ and that many people advised against the idea.
From a production standpoint, it’s not something anyone would recommend. If you believe an episodic approach alone will guarantee success, good luck — creativity is the cornerstone. A strong story can be split in any way and still resonate.
Chong says the episodic structure is what helped make the game a viral sensation. Dispatch follows a hero stripped of his super-suit who ends up working in an office while recruiting a team of supervillains. Each installment sparked conversation in the community and kept interest in the game alive.
If we’d released everything at once, the game might have found success, but not on the same scale.
He stressed that the approach only succeeds with a compelling story:
If the story is weak, episodic releases won’t capture attention. But when the writing is strong, the impact is amplified.
AdHoc is weighing the possibility of a second season of Dispatch.
