The Best Way to Prepare for Dune 3 Arrives This September

Dune: Part Three is slated to arrive in theaters on December 18, just in time for the holiday season. Anticipation is reaching a fever pitch for what serves as the final chapter in Denis Villeneuve’s cinematic adaptation of Frank Herbert’s seminal science fiction masterpiece. With several months remaining until the premiere, the wait promises to be an exercise in patience.

For fans looking to immerse themselves in Arrakis ahead of the film, there is an ideal remedy: the expansive open-world survival game Dune: Awakening, which lands on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on September 22.

Dune: Awakening is the perfect bridge to the next cinematic installment

Developed by Funcom with support from Nukklear, Dune: Awakening is a visually arresting open-world RPG powered by Unreal Engine 5. It captures the harsh beauty of Frank Herbert’s desert planet so effectively that the game has even inspired a dedicated coffee table art book.

Gameplay mirrors the harsh realities of Arrakis: players must master resource gathering, sophisticated crafting, and strategic survival amidst the blistering dunes. Between dodging colossal sandworms and navigating the cutthroat spice trade, players must constantly prioritize hydration and shelter. In this unforgiving ecosystem, the indigenous fauna rarely distinguishes between houses when it comes to finding a meal.

While the PC version experienced a rocky rollout—complete with bugs that left players unexpectedly vulnerable—the development team has since refined the experience. The console iteration will launch with these crucial stability improvements and additional polish. According to Polygon’s Josh Broadwell, the console release brings the game closer to its intended vision:

The console version incorporates significant enhancements introduced to the PC build over the past few months, including expanded story chapters, character specializations, new map regions, and combat-focused zones. These endgame additions, along with the high-tier gear earned through clearing these zones, provide the structured progression that was notably missing at launch.

Beyond these refinements, Funcom is introducing a dedicated single-player mode, offering a more solitary exploration of the planet for those who prefer to avoid the pressures of a persistent online environment. This feature will also be extended to PC players this September.

Officially announced during the latest State of Play, Dune: Awakening arrives on current-gen consoles on September 22. It provides the perfect opportunity to sharpen your survival skills in the deep desert before witnessing the conclusion of Paul Atreides’ saga on the big screen.
