The long-standing silence from The Avalanches has finally been broken. The iconic Australian electronic outfit has returned with their first fresh material in nearly six years: “Together,” a vibrant collaboration featuring Nikki Nair, Jessy Lanza, and Prentiss, released via Modular Recordings.
If you were anticipating the nostalgic, lo-fi patchwork of Motown samples that defined their earlier work, prepare for a pivot. “Together” is unapologetically modern—an infectious, high-energy dance anthem that pulses with more kinetic force than a seasoned athlete at a combine.
Now consisting of core members Robbie Chater, Tony Di Blasi, and Andy Szekeres, the group fundamentally reshaped the landscape of electronic music with their seminal 2000 debut, Since I Left You. By masterfully weaving fragments of artists ranging from Madonna to Françoise Hardy into a cohesive sonic tapestry, they created an album that felt simultaneously timeless and revolutionary—a blueprint for modern collaborative sampling.
While their sophomore follow-up, Wildflower, took sixteen years to materialize, it soared to No. 1 on the ARIA Albums Chart. They maintained that momentum with 2020’s We Will Always Love You, which secured the prestigious Australian Music Prize for Album of the Year. After a brief 2024 appearance on Jamie XX’s “All You Children,” it appears the band is officially gearing up for a new era.
“Together” serves as the centerpiece of a whimsical new “Superfun” campaign. The project is accompanied by an animated music video, directed by Jonathan Zawada, which anthropomorphizes retro tech—including floppy disks and iPods—giving them limbs to dance through a bright, cheerful world. The visual even features a heavenly appearance from the legendary Nokia 3310.
The release is accompanied by a cryptic mission statement: “How are you looking after your memories? At Takumi digital archives your most treasured moments are safe with us.” Fans can explore this mysterious initiative further at takumiarchives.com.
