Following last week’s cryptic teases, Marvel Comics has officially unveiled details for its grim new horror-focused publication line. Operating entirely outside of main canon, the “Marvel Midnight Universe” promises chilling, macabre reinterpretations of iconic properties, spearheaded by terrifying takes on the X-Men, Spider-Man, and the Fantastic Four.
“With this Midnight imprint, we’ve empowered some of our most visionary creators to plunge into the abyss of their own imaginations, delivering the most unsettling and nightmare-inducing portrayals of the Marvel Universe ever captured on the page,” said editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski in a statement.
Writer Jonathan Hickman is set to return to the X-Men for the inaugural Midnight X-Men title. Hickman is renowned for his transformative 2019 Krakoan Age reinvention of the mutants, a sweeping saga that saw the X-Men conquer death, establish a sovereign mutant nation, and fundamentally shift their paradigm—before shifting back to their classic status as a persecuted, fugitive species.
In this dark iteration, the X-Men find themselves embroiled in a brutal confrontation with vampires amidst the urban decay of New York City. “The core concept of Midnight X-Men is perfectly aligned with the kind of stories I thrive on,” Hickman remarked. “It offers a rich, expansive mythology that blends classic tropes with fresh, disturbing ideas to craft something that feels both eerily familiar and entirely new.” He is joined by artist Matteo Della Fonte, with the inaugural issue’s primary cover illustrated by Dike Ruan.
Midnight Fantastic Four centers on an “obsessive scientist”—presumably Reed Richards—whose dangerous curiosity leads to a catastrophic event that leaves the quartet “warped in strange and horrifying ways.” Author Benjamin Percy, collaborating with artist Kev Walker, promises to frame Marvel’s First Family through the lens of profound, Lovecraftian cosmic dread. “When Hickman reached out, it felt like a call from a landline in the basement of a condemned house with severed wires. Blood literally poured from the receiver into my ear. I immediately said yes,” Percy shared.
Finally, Midnight Spider-Man appears to draw inspiration from body-horror elements like the “Man-Spider” arcs of the past and the iconic ’90s animated series. The story follows a Peter Parker transformed by Oscorp into a grotesque spider-hybrid, now on a desperate mission to halt the corporation’s inhuman experiments. Phillip Kennedy Johnson is set to write, featuring the Marvel debut of artist Scie Tronc.
Midnight X-Men #1 hits shelves on August 5, followed by Midnight Fantastic Four in September and Midnight Spider-Man in October. Adding to the macabre atmosphere, all subsequent issues will feature “Cloaked Covers”—partially obscured artwork that will only fully reveal itself to the brave readers who decide to purchase them.
