Take-Two Forces Shutdown of ModsRAGE Multiplayer

RAGE Multiplayer, the long-standing alternative platform that enabled GTA 5 players to host and enjoy custom roleplay experiences, has officially initiated its sunset phase.

The project developers broke the news on May 25, citing direct pressure from Take-Two Interactive. Representatives from the publisher issued a mandate to cease all operations, asserting that RAGE Multiplayer’s architecture stood in direct violation of their Platform License Agreement (PLA).

In response to the closure, the thousands of displaced server operators and players are being encouraged to transition to FiveM. Since Rockstar Games’ acquisition of Cfx.re, FiveM has transitioned into an officially sanctioned product, making it the primary sanctuary for the community.

The shutdown will occur in phases: the public server browser is scheduled to be taken offline on June 1, with full technical support for the platform concluding on August 31. All community migrations must be finalized by this deadline. It is a bittersweet milestone, as the announcement arrives almost exactly a decade after the platform’s original debut.

The news has ignited a firestorm of debate within the community. Loyal users are mourning the loss of a fan-driven ecosystem, viewing the shutdown as a heavy-handed suppression of creative freedom. Many critics argue that Rockstar’s absorption of FiveM was a strategic maneuver designed to consolidate control, effectively clearing the path to eliminate rival platforms like RAGE. While legally sound from the perspective of Take-Two, the move has left many enthusiasts feeling sidelined.

Conversely, a segment of the player base has met the announcement with indifference or relief, citing long-standing grievances regarding RAGE Multiplayer’s heavy reliance on aggressive monetization and microtransactions. For these players, the platform’s forced closure marks a necessary end to an era they felt had grown increasingly exploitative.
