Supergirl Receives Official HBO Max Streaming Date

DC Studios and Warner Bros. released Supergirl earlier this year in theaters as the second film in James Gunn’s nascent cinematic DC Universe. Despite a solid star in the lead role and a story adapted from one of the character’s most well-received comics, the movie failed to garner widespread critical and commercial success. Supergirl ended its theatrical run with just $126 million earned at the global box office.

Warner Bros. and DC Studios have confirmed that Supergirl will land on HBO Max next week.

Supergirl follows Milly Alcock as the titular hero, also known as Kara Zor-El, as she becomes embroiled in a hunt for the villainous Krem of the Yellow Hill after he poisons Krypto. The hunt also brings Kara into contact with the young girl, Ruthey, who enlists Kara’s help in a mission of revenge, revealing that Krem killed her father as well.

The True Grit-inspired story takes the unlikely pair across the galaxy to complete their shared search for revenge. Craig Gillespie directed the film, and Ana Nogueira wrote the script. The story was based on the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic series written by Tom King, who serves as a core architect and writer for the DCU.

DC Studios’ Supergirl will officially begin streaming on HBO Max starting on Sept. 10.

Will Supergirl return in future DC movies?

Milly Alcock makes for a wonderful Kara, but the overarching story and execution of the film leave much to be desired. The film flopped at the box office with an opening weekend gross of $38 million, close to the opening of Joker: Folie à Deux. Polygon’s review highlighted the main issue with the film, stating that where James Gunn’s Superman set a high bar for weirdness and unexpected ways of reimagining familiar characters, Supergirl strolls under that bar without ever coming close to touching it. The review added that the DCU may finally have an identity of its own, but that identity is not as startling or challenging as Superman might have suggested.

Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow

Despite the poor response to the film, Warner Bros. confirmed that Milly Alcock will reprise her role. She will appear in Superman: Man of Tomorrow, which is scheduled for release on July 9, 2027. She will join a cast that includes returning actors from Superman as well as Aaron Pierre making his cinematic debut as John Stewart, a character viewers can currently see in the Lanterns television show.
