Subnautica 2 Developers Reveal Silver Lining Behind Game’s Major Delay
Subnautica 2 is officially slated for an early access launch on May 14. This release arrives in the wake of a tumultuous pre-production cycle, marked by executive restructuring, a high-stakes legal dispute regarding a $250 million payout, the reinstatement of its CEO, and a premature release window announcement that caught leadership off guard.
A significant factor in this disruption was a scheduled delay; in July 2025, Krafton postponed the game’s early access debut while simultaneously offloading several Unknown Worlds Entertainment executives. Among those let go was co-founder and director Charlie Cleveland, who had maintained that the title was already market-ready. At the time, he expressed his frustration via Reddit, stating: “We know the game is ready for early access release and we know you’re ready to play it. While we anticipated this decision would be ours to make, for the moment, that authority rests with Krafton.”
Reflecting on the controversy, game design lead Anthony Gallegos noted in a recent conversation with Polygon that determining the ideal launch timing was a subject of heated internal debate. “I have always leaned toward earlier releases, and I found myself more aligned with Charlie’s perspective than others,” Gallegos admitted. “However, even within the founder-level leadership, there were conflicting opinions.” He described the decision to enter early access as a subjective process—a “you know it when you see it” scenario.
The extended development timeline has allowed Unknown Worlds to flesh out Subnautica 2 with considerably more content. Gallegos emphasized that the team avoided the industry-standard “crunch” culture while simultaneously working diligently to expand the game’s scope.
While this extra time was utilized to refine existing systems, Gallegos acknowledged a notable downside: the studio lacked the immediate, granular community feedback that has historically defined Unknown Worlds’ iterative development philosophy.
Despite the challenges, Gallegos characterized Subnautica 2 as “arguably the most robust, feature-complete early access launch our studio has ever undertaken.” Creative media producer Scott MacDonald concurred, noting the team’s satisfaction with the positive reception from early testers.
To ensure the game felt substantial upon arrival, the team established rigorous internal benchmarks. “We set specific goals regarding content volume and core feature sets that we believed would provide a solid foundation for future development,” MacDonald explained.
Ultimately, the developers remain deeply appreciative of the community’s patience and loyalty throughout what has been a whirlwind year for the studio.
“It has been incredibly heartening to see the community rally behind the team and the game,” MacDonald added. “That support has been instrumental in helping the development team push forward and reach this point.”
