Stranger Things spin-off will start with a clean slate and won’t resemble Star Wars or Marvel projects

The fifth season of “Stranger Things” will serve as the show’s finale, but the Duffer Brothers are already crafting a new narrative.

The Duffer Brothers have confirmed that the fifth season of “Stranger Things” will conclude the central storyline, and that the forthcoming spinoff will not act as a direct continuation of the series. In an interview with Variety, Matt and Ross Duffer explained that the new project will stand on its own and introduce an entirely different cast of characters.

Matt Duffer emphasized that the spinoff won’t follow the model of franchises like Star Wars or the Marvel universe, where each addition expands an overarching mythology. The creators aim to preserve the spirit of the original — adolescent adventures infused with science-fiction — without building a complex web of interconnections. Instead, upcoming entries will function more like an anthology: linked by a shared storytelling style and atmosphere rather than a single, ongoing plot.

Development of the spinoff is proceeding alongside production of the fifth season, though specific details about the new show have not yet been revealed.

The final season of “Stranger Things” is set to premiere on November 26.
