Stone Kite Is a New Studio from Halo, Destiny Creator Jason Jones and Author Margaret Stohl, and Its First Project Is About Rogue AI Robots
Jason Jones, a visionary co-founder of Bungie whose credits include shaping the iconic Halo franchise and directing Destiny, has established Stone Kite. Based in Los Angeles, this ambitious new development outfit is co-founded alongside acclaimed author Margaret Stohl—renowned for her work on Beautiful Creatures and various multimedia projects spanning television, comics, and video games like Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate. Their inaugural endeavor, titled One Zero One, transports players into a dystopian future threatened by rebellious, rogue artificial intelligence combat units.
Kicking off the journey, the project launches with the first installment of a four-part comic miniseries bearing the same title, which enthusiasts can read directly here. This transmedia rollout highlights the studio’s overarching philosophy: crafting expansive narratives that thrive across diverse entertainment mediums rather than remaining confined to traditional gaming formats.
“Stone Kite was built upon a fundamental realization: modern audiences consume narratives across an interconnected web of media, and our creative methodologies should mirror that reality,”
Stohl elaborates that the studio aims to shatter outdated industry silos. Instead of linear adaptations originating from a single source, Stone Kite integrates elite multidisciplinary creators from day one to collaboratively forge immersive universes. By engaging directly with communities and discarding traditional industry boundaries, the team seeks to build enduring franchises designed to captivate audiences for decades.
While the premier issue of One Zero One arrives today—featuring exclusive excerpts drawn straight from Jones’ personal manuscript—subsequent chapters will roll out through early 2027. These forthcoming releases will continually enrich the intellectual property via prose, audio dramas, and screen adaptations. Reflecting on this career shift, Jones shares fond memories of cycling fifteen miles along Lake Michigan to unearth sci-fi paperbacks in North Chicago, noting that Stohl was the catalyst who encouraged him to pen his own universe.
The creative roster behind the One Zero One universe boasts heavy-hitting talent, including screenwriter Eric Heisserer (Arrival, Bird Box), writer Christina Strain (Shadow and Bone, The Magicians), and character designer Kris Anka (Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse). They are joined by renowned comic illustrators such as Dan Panosian, Ramón Pérez, Alitha Martinez, Raúl Allén, and Hyeonjin Kim.
Though Stone Kite’s transmedia ambitions are undeniably grand, similar cross-platform strategies have proven precarious in the past—such as Reflector Entertainment’s Unknown 9 initiative, which unfortunately stalled following its initial game release. Only time will reveal whether Jones and Stohl can successfully execute their sweeping vision and redefine interactive storytelling.
