Stephen King to Release Final Book in The Talisman Trilogy

Comment Views: 3

There are not many parts of Stephen King‘s bibliography that qualify as obscure. As one of the most famous novelists on Earth and a prominent horror author, even lesser-known works by Stephen King usually become bestsellers.

Stephen King has dug into his back catalog for a new release. Other Worlds Than These is the second sequel to The Talisman, a 1984 horror and fantasy novel written in collaboration with the late Peter Straub (Ghost Story, Mr. X). The book is available now.

More than 25 years have passed since the previous installment in the series. As the title suggests, the book relates to Stephen King’s Dark Tower series, though distantly. Fans of those books who missed The Talisman can catch up before diving into Other Worlds Than These.

The Talisman is set in 1981. Jack Sawyer is a 12-year-old boy whose mother, actress and B-movie queen Lily Cavanaugh, suffers from terminal lung cancer. They recently moved from Los Angeles to a tourist town in New Hampshire. Lily tries to escape Morgan Sloat, her late husband’s business partner. Sloat is greedy and untrustworthy, barely concealing his involvement in the murder of Phil Sawyer.

Jack befriends Speedy, a local maintenance worker who teaches Jack how to see and reach another world. Speedy calls this realm the Territories, which serves as a magical reflection of Earth. Everyone on Earth has a twinner in the Territories, except for those who survived the deaths of their Territories duplicates.

Speedy states that Lily’s twinner is Queen Laura of the Territories, who is equally ill. An artifact in the California equivalent of the Territories can cure both Lily and Laura. Armed with the ability to flip between Earth and the Territories, Jack journeys across the United States to claim the Talisman and save his mother.

Published in 2001, Black House is a direct sequel to The Talisman and takes place in the fictional town of French Landing, Wisconsin. Jack is now an adult and a former LAPD homicide detective who took early retirement.

Child abductions overwhelm the sheriff of French Landing, prompting Jack to reluctantly assist the investigation. Jack discovers that the abductions connect to the Territories and the Dark Tower. If Jack fails to rescue the most recently taken child, the Tower may fall and destroy all of existence.

According to Stephen King’s afterword in Black House, Stephen King and Peter Straub wrote both The Talisman and Black House by taking turns. Straub wrote for a period before passing the manuscript to Stephen King. Stephen King noted in the same afterword that the connections between Black House and the Dark Tower series originated from Straub.

In a 2010 Reddit AMA, Peter Straub wrote that the initial outline for The Talisman was developed face-to-face in his Westport, Connecticut office. Subsequent drafts were completed in person or sent back and forth via modem.

Worlds enough and time

Following the release of Black House, Stephen King and Peter Straub independently discussed a third book in the Talisman series. Scheduling conflicts stalled the project for 25 years. Shortly before Peter Straub died in 2022, he sent Stephen King a long letter regarding the book that became Other Worlds Than These. Stephen King finished the novel independently, using Peter Straub’s notes and his own ideas.

According to Stephen King’s website, Other Worlds Than These pits an older Jack against a rampaging gang of infected teenagers on Earth while he contends with a force from the Territories named the Gullet.

Stephen King published a preview of Other Worlds Than These in Esquire earlier this year. The first chapter is available to read now, though it spoils a significant portion of the conclusion of Black House. Readers may want to finish that novel before checking out the Esquire preview.

The first edition of Other Worlds Than These includes 38 black-and-white illustrations by Gabriel Rodriguez, who previously collaborated with Stephen King on the 2002 work Fairy Tale.

Multiversal constants

After The Long Walk reached movie theaters last year, a live-action adaptation of The Talisman may be the Stephen King project that has spent the most time in development hell.

Steven Spielberg has owned the rights to The Talisman through Universal Pictures for over 40 years, making several attempts to adapt it. Around 2009, Amblin Entertainment produced The Talisman as a six-hour miniseries for TNT, but that project fell through.

Netflix provided the most recent adaptation news. Matt and Ross Duffer (Stranger Things) were once attached to create a Netflix television show based on The Talisman, but the deal officially fell apart in December 2025. The conclusion of the Talisman trilogy may reignite Hollywood interest in an adaptation.

The age of the Talisman books highlights how far ahead of their time they were. The Talisman explores alternate universes in a manner similar to Silent Hill and Everything Everywhere All At Once. Furthermore, sections of both novels, particularly Black House, anticipate modern horror media focused on liminal spaces such as Exit 8 and The Backrooms.

Reading these books today feels like discovering a lost ancestry or a missing link. Pop culture has simply spent over 40 years catching up.

Other Worlds Than These is available now.
