Stephen King Adaptation Series Premieres on Prime Video This Week

Prime Video prepares for the eight-episode release of a literary television adaptation based on Stephen King’s first-ever novel. Previous adaptations include a 1976 film directed by Brian de Palma and a 2013 remake directed by Kimberly Peirce. In this new version, King serves as an executive producer alongside longtime collaborator Mike Flanagan. Flanagan previously adapted Doctor Sleep, The Life of Chuck, and Gerald’s Game. This project also marks the beginning of Flanagan’s partnership with Prime Video, where he is currently developing an adaptation of King’s epic fantasy The Dark Tower.

Flanagan often works with the same cast of actors on each project, but this upcoming series features newcomers like Summer H. Howell and Amber Midthunder. This fresh batch of actors helps round out a typical Flanagan production, serving as a vehicle for introducing younger generations to a classic story.

Carrie gets to spread her wings with this new runtime

Most people know Carrie even if they have not read the book or seen the films, as the title has become synonymous with the destructive nature of bullying. The novel was written in 1974 and de Palma’s film came out in 1976. Since the cultural landscape has changed significantly since then, Flanagan’s adaptation leans into that shift and has the room to fully flesh out the story.

Social media plays a major role in this retelling, bringing the characters into a world of cell phones and apps. First reactions to the show have praised this inclusion. In his review of the series, Polygon’s Jake Kleinman writes, “We know the story’s true horror will eventually emerge from Carrie’s awful psychic outburst, but watching the entire town squirm under the pressure of anonymous social media accusations is even more agonizing.”

Such a change can be controversial, yet it provides a fresh look at a decades-old story. Given Flanagan’s track record, he is well-suited for the material. Carrie holds an emotional weight beneath the horror of its exterior that can be constrained within the limits of a feature film. With an episodic runtime allowing the source material to unfold fully, the adaptation explores new territory.

The show currently holds an 84% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus states that the series is “bringing a modern touch to a timeless work and giving all performers involved the opportunity to shine.”

The series debuts on Prime Video on October 7.
