The Lost Wild Highlights the Dangers of Coexisting With Dinosaurs
Instead of fighting every animal they encounter, players will need to hide from predators and grow accustomed to living alongside them.
Developer Great Ape has released a development diary for The Lost Wild explaining how the team is creating scientifically grounded dinosaurs capable of terrifying players through their behavior.
In the video, the team outlines its approach to designing the prehistoric creatures. Game Director Gary Napper stated that the goal is to convey the fear of encountering such animals and show how they behave within the environment.
Writer Tom Hughes described the main character, Saskia, as an ordinary person suddenly thrust among prehistoric creatures. Art Director Tim Mehmet discussed the team’s research and field trips, including visits to California’s Redwood forest. Programmer Lou Thorpe-Monagan emphasized that the team treats the dinosaurs as independent characters rather than enemies:
We have always treated them as creatures that exist independently of the player’s presence.
Players will need to sneak past dinosaurs and adjust to life near them rather than fighting every animal they encounter. The Lost Wild is scheduled for release in 2027 on PC and PS5, though an exact release date has not yet been announced.
