“Steals the Fun”: Halo Remake Made Because Developers Didn’t Know What to Do Next — Original Creator Criticizes New Shooter

Not everyone is pleased to see classic Halo return in a refreshed form.

Halo Campaign Evolved — a remake of Halo: Combat Evolved — was announced recently. The original game’s lead designer has reviewed the promotional material.

Jamie Griesemer shared his thoughts — he isn’t particularly enthusiastic about the remake itself and suggested Halo Studios pursued the project because they haven’t yet decided what direction to take the franchise:

[…] what’s the point of a “remake”? Nostalgia? To lure a new generation of fans? To keep a huge art team busy while you decide what to do next?

In the remake’s promo, the designer noticed changed level layouts — you can now drive the Warthog into areas that forced players to proceed on foot in the original. Jamie explained why those constraints were intentional:

You couldn’t just take the Warthog and mow down the Hunters. I deliberately placed rocks in the path so players had to fight them on foot. When you can [just run them over], it spoils the whole encounter.

When players told him they’d found ways to drive the Warthog into those spots in the original Halo, he replied:

That’s what makes it so enjoyable! You outsmarted the mission designer. The remake aims to highlight how clever the level designer is — and in doing so it steals the fun.
