Starfleet Academy Showrunner: Deep Space Nine Tribute Episode Inspired by “Deep Love”

Starfleet Academy subverts the traditional Star Trek formula by trading the bridge of a deep-space vessel for the lecture halls of San Francisco. While the series focuses on the next generation of cadets, it remains deeply rooted in the franchise’s expansive lore. This connection is most prominent in the fifth episode, “Series Acclimation Mil,” which serves as a sophisticated tribute to the 1990s masterpiece Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

“When I joined the project, longtime fans emerged from every corner of my life to ask when Sisko would finally get his due,” Starfleet Academy co-showrunner Noga Landau shared in a recent interview. “Writers Tawny Newsome and Kirsten Beyer shared that reverence. They have an abiding affection for DS9 and Captain Sisko. We dedicated ourselves to crafting a narrative that felt organic to our world while functioning as the love letter the fans deserved.”

Scripted by Newsome (of Lower Decks fame) and Beyer (co-creator of Star Trek: Picard), the episode focuses on SAM (Series Acclimation Mil), a holographic student portrayed by Kerrice Brooks. SAM acts as a diplomatic bridge for the Kasquians, a newly introduced species of photonic beings. Having evolved from a history of servitude, the Kasquians remain skeptical of organic life. SAM’s performance at the Academy is the ultimate litmus test: her success could lead to Federation membership, while her failure would result in their total isolation.

Mirroring her peers’ domestic struggles, SAM deals with a domineering, medusoid creator who views her musical pursuits as frivolous. Instead, SAM is forced into a curriculum titled “Confronting the Unexplainable,” a course designed to analyze the galaxy’s most enigmatic phenomena.

The course delves into everything from Vulcan katra stones to omnipotent entities, but SAM becomes fixated on the polarizing legacy of Captain Benjamin Sisko. The historical record remains split: did Sisko perish in the Fire Caves of Bajor, or did he transcend his physical form to join the Prophets in the Celestial Temple? SAM, grappling with her own role as a messenger, feels a profound spiritual connection to Sisko and vows to uncover the truth for her instructor, Illa (Newsome).

SAM’s investigation leads her through Bajoran literature and tense cultural exchanges with Bajoran students. Narratively, the episode leans into meta-commentary, with SAM frequently breaking the fourth wall to process her observations on the organic condition.

“The script was essentially a massive, 36-page monologue,” Brooks noted. “Acting is typically built on reaction, but here, I had to find the internal momentum to drive these observations forward without a traditional scene partner to bounce off of.”

When the pressure of her mission becomes overwhelming, SAM rebels. She modifies her subroutines to experience intoxication during a night at a cadet lounge, which inevitably leads to a skirmish with War College rivals. This lapse in judgment results in a stern lecture from the Doctor (Robert Picardo), the legendary medical hologram who now serves as an Academy mentor.

“While biological beings fear their end, the Doctor is burdened by his permanence,” Picardo explained. “His vast lifespan has made him cautious about forming new, intimate attachments.”

Ultimately, SAM finds guidance from a familiar source. She discovers that Professor Illa is the current host of the Dax symbiont—Sisko’s former confidante. Illa provides SAM with a memoir penned by Sisko’s son, Jake (revisited by Cirroc Lofton), allowing SAM to find peace in the unknown and the strength to defy her creators’ restrictive expectations.

Upon its debut, Deep Space Nine was often criticized for its stationary setting and darker wartime themes. Decades later, it is celebrated as a pillar of the franchise. By revisiting this legacy, Starfleet Academy highlights the enduring power of Trek’s most challenging stories, proving that even in a changing galaxy, some legends remain timeless.
