Shawn Levy’s upcoming film will be neither a prequel nor a sequel to other entries in the Star Wars universe.
Director Shawn Levy has confirmed that his new picture, Star Wars: Starfighter, will be an original adventure featuring new characters and its own timeline, preserving primarily the spirit and themes of the classic saga.
In an interview with Collider, Levy described the project as “a fresh, standalone story” with no direct ties to previous franchise films.
“To begin with, it’s a completely new adventure — neither a sequel nor a prequel. New characters, a fresh chronology. It draws on the saga’s classic themes while aiming to give Star Wars fans and casual viewers alike something new: the honest thrill of adventure and moments of genuine joy — the very qualities that, frankly, made A New Hope feel revolutionary.”
Levy said Lucasfilm has embraced the independent approach, not constraining the filmmaker with strict canon or forcing the story into existing threads. “There’s only a love for what came before,” he added.
Alongside Ryan Gosling, the cast includes Flynn Grey, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Amy Adams, and other performers.
The film is scheduled to open in theaters on May 28, 2027.
