It is an exciting era for enthusiasts of the galaxy’s most resilient Sith. Star Wars — Maul: Shadow Lord places the former apprentice center stage, picking up the narrative thread a year after the catastrophic events of Revenge of the Sith. While most fans identify Maul by his brutal defeat in The Phantom Menace and his subsequent survival in The Clone Wars, the true hallmark of his enduring appeal remains his haunting, gravel-filled voice.
Voice actor Sam Witwer—also celebrated for his role as Starkiller in the broader Star Wars canon—has discussed how he synthesized his performance. Drawing inspiration from both original actor Ray Park and the film’s dubbing voice, Peter Serafinowicz, Witwer utilized those foundational performances as a launching pad to craft a unique, visceral tone that resonates deeply with the fanbase.
But exactly how has that signature delivery evolved over the years?

“There is always a subtle shift. I view these different timelines as distinct iterations of the character,” Witwer explained to Polygon. “You have the early Clone Wars years, the ‘Spider-Maul’ period, his later appearances, and eventually his role in Rebels.”
As Witwer notes, Maul has endured a harrowing transformation—shifting from a loyal pawn of Darth Sidious to a broken, vengeance-driven recluse, and finally into a weary, remorseful older man. During his descent into madness, Witwer projected a raw, feral intensity, whereas his portrayal in Rebels reflects a far more calculated and composed demeanor.
In Maul: Shadow Lord, we find the protagonist maneuvering as a crime syndicate leader, determined to cement his grip on the underworld on Janix. The latest episodes showcase a version of Maul who remains as lethal as ever, yet possesses a strategic wisdom that was previously absent. This vocal evolution serves as a clear indicator of a character in constant flux.
“His arc is fascinating,” says Witwer. “I hope the audience can distinguish the various dimensions of his growth through these vocal shifts.”
The premiere episodes of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord are currently streaming on Disney Plus, with new chapters dropping every Monday through May 4.
