Star Fox 64 Remake Coming to Switch 2 This June

Star Fox 64 Remake for Switch 2

In a thrilling surprise during today’s Nintendo Direct, industry icons Shigeru Miyamoto and Yoshiaki Koizumi unveiled a ground-up remake of the Nintendo 64 classic, Star Fox 64, specifically designed for the Switch 2. This announcement follows closely on the heels of Fox McCloud’s recent cameo in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

Fans can look forward to revisiting the beloved locales of the original title, now enhanced with a variety of difficulty settings. The experience brings back fan-favorite sequences—including Landmaster tank operations, Blue Marine underwater missions, and intense All-Range Mode dogfights—while retaining the iconic stage layouts players know and love. However, everything else has been overhauled: expect modernized graphics, refreshed character designs, completely reimagined dialogue, and brand-new cinematic cutscenes.

Beyond the core campaign, this version introduces specialized challenge missions that add unique objectives not found in the original game, playable in both Normal and Expert modes. Leveraging the unique hardware of the Switch 2, the game supports creative control schemes, including mouse-based navigation. Players can also engage in a novel co-op mode, where one person handles flight controls via Joy-Con, while the other utilizes mouse inputs to manage the gunnery.

The experience isn’t limited to solo flight; the fan-favorite Battle Mode returns, allowing players to duke it out as either Star Fox or Star Wolf across classic arenas like Corneria, Fichina, and Sector Y. These competitive sessions support both public matchmaking and private lobbies. True to its N64 roots, the game also includes local GameShare capabilities. Additionally, the integrated GameChat feature offers a fun twist: a character avatar system that lets you project your presence during voice chats as the Star Fox character of your choice.

The wait to rejoin the team won’t be long, as Star Fox prepares to take flight on the Switch 2 on June 25.
