Sony PlayStation Shuts Down Fan-Made The Last of Us Part II PC Multiplayer

Sony’s lawyers have taken notice of an unofficial online mode.

The Last of Us Part II never received an official multiplayer mode. However, following the release of the game’s remastered version on PC, fans gained a chance to experience multiplayer.

A modder known as Speclizer worked on this project. In recent months, he actively published teasers of the custom The Last of Us Part II Remastered multiplayer. He managed to achieve significant progress: core gameplay mechanics were functional, and Speclizer also implemented matchmaking and loadout customization alongside various available weapon models.

The public release of the multiplayer version for The Last of Us Part II Remastered was previously scheduled for the current month, but Speclizer recently announced that he is stopping work on the project. He made this decision after receiving a letter from lawyers representing Sony Interactive Entertainment (PlayStation).

Speclizer published a message to players on a social network. He will not release the multiplayer for The Last of Us Part II Remastered. The modder will now create an entirely original project of his own:

As you know, the TLOU multiplayer mod, which has been in development since January, was supposed to come out this month. Unfortunately, I recently received a letter from Sony Interactive Entertainment demanding that I not release this mod. It is a great shame that the project is not destined to see the light of day, but I hope you will continue to follow my next project—this time it will be entirely my own project. Thank you all for the incredible support over the past year. I hope to present something even bigger and more interesting to you soon!

Many players remain very unhappy with this decision by Sony, as the company shut down the fan-made initiative for The Last of Us Part II Remastered while failing to offer an official multiplayer mode itself.
