Sony Confirms PlayStation Will Not Return to Disc-Based Games on PS5 Boxes
Sony has begun adding an official warning about the shift to digital distribution to PS5 packaging.
Buyers noticed that new batches of the PS5 feature a message about the future of the platform. It states:
Important Information: Starting in January 2028, all new PlayStation games will be available for purchase exclusively in digital format—on the PlayStation Store and from retailers. Games released on disc prior to January 2028 can still be played on this console.
The message is printed on the boxes in multiple languages. Sony previously told investors that it does not plan to reconsider its decision and has begun retraining employees at its Austrian plant, which manufactured discs for many years.

Despite petitions and calls for a boycott, the company stated that it sees no impact from them on its business. According to Sony, the growth in digital sales confirms its chosen strategy.
