Sony has confirmed long-rumored plans for a new entry in the Horizon universe. The title is Horizon: Steel Frontiers, but contrary to expectations it will not release on PlayStation 5.
For years the Horizon franchise has been one of Sony’s flagship series. Aloy’s journeys, her clashes with mechanical beasts, and her investigations into the mysteries of a lost world have won over players. Rumors that the studio was collaborating with NCSoft on a full-scale MMORPG have now been officially confirmed.
The biggest surprise is the choice of platforms. Horizon: Steel Frontiers is in development as a PC and mobile-only experience. This is the first time a PlayStation Studios title will be launched without support for Sony’s consoles.
At G-Star 2025 the first details were revealed. The game is being developed by NCSoft with participation from Guerrilla Games. Developers promise a vast online world with hunting mechanics, machine combat, and exploration. The action takes place in the Deadlands region, inspired by Arizona and New Mexico. Players will become machine hunters, seeking rare resources and new opportunities.
The project will feature large-scale raids, clashes between tribes, many players on a single map, and the ability to use weapons salvaged from defeated machines. It will also include deep character customization.
The first teaser has been published. Guerrilla’s head, Jan-Bart van Bick, said the project will deliver “a new yet still recognizable Horizon experience.”
