Solving the Mystery of Spider-Man’s Brand New Day Villains Based on Rumors

The previous Spider-Man cinematic entry was a grand multiversal event, uniting a trio of Peter Parkers to fend off threats from several alternate realities. By the time the dust settled, a global memory wipe restored the hero’s anonymity, granting him a clean slate in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. However, the debut trailer suggests that this “fresh start” is anything but peaceful. Peter is set to collide with a gauntlet of adversaries, ranging from vengeful ghosts of his past to enigmatic new players. Here is a breakdown of the villains Tom Holland’s webslinger may encounter.

The Long-Awaited Return of Scorpion

The most prominent antagonist featured in the footage is Mac Gargan, better known as Scorpion (Michael Mando). Audiences first met Gargan in Spider-Man: Homecoming, where he was busted during an arms deal involving Chitauri technology. While the mid-credits scene of that film hinted at a burning desire for retribution, the Brand New Day trailer presents a different dynamic. Now free from incarceration, Scorpion doesn’t appear to be actively hunting Peter; instead, he issues a stern warning for the wall-crawler to stay out of his business.

A Shadowy Martial Arts Syndicate

The trailer showcases a high-octane prison skirmish where Spider-Man battles a legion of ninjas clad in crimson. Given the recent integration of Netflix’s Marvel characters into the mainline MCU—with Matt Murdock appearing in No Way Home and Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) slated for a confrontation here—these warriors could very well be The Hand.

However, there is another possibility. This film is helmed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the visionary behind Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. At the conclusion of that film, Xialing (Meng’er Zhang) took command of her father’s organization. We have yet to see the payoff of that transition, making this the perfect opportunity for Cretton to bridge his MCU projects. We might even witness a territorial dispute between the Ten Rings and The Hand.

The Rise of Tombstone

Circulating online rumors indicate that the cinematic prison break might be the work of Lonnie Lincoln, the indestructible crime lord known as Tombstone. Having previously been voiced by Krondon in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the actor is now confirmed to bring the character to life in the live-action MCU. Utilizing low-level chaos to mask a larger grab for power in New York City is a classic Tombstone maneuver.

An Intangible Adversary

The teaser hints at a “danger that cannot be seen,” accompanied by footage of a psychic entity leaping between hosts. This has fueled theories regarding Stranger Things star Sadie Sink, who is cast in a mystery role. Many fans suspect she could be playing the mutant telepath Jean Grey. Alternatively, the “unseen” threat might be Mister Negative, a villain central to the 2008 “Brand New Day” comic arc. That storyline mirrored the current film’s premise: a “soft reboot” of Peter’s life following a supernatural pact with Mephisto to erase his secret identity.

Additional Rogues

Reports also mention the inclusion of minor villains Boomerang and Tarantula. Given the already packed roster, it’s likely these two will appear in a montage illustrating Peter’s daily grind as New York’s protector, rather than serving as primary antagonists.
