Sheryl Crow has joined a chorus of critics expressing dismay over the transformation of the White House lawn into a high-stakes UFC arena. On Monday, June 15, the acclaimed singer-songwriter took to Instagram to voice her disapproval, characterizing the display of professional combat sports at the heart of the nation’s capital as an insensitive spectacle while many citizens grapple with the economic strain of rising living costs and geopolitical instability.
“What transpired on the White House grounds last night was deeply shameful and utterly devoid of decency,” Crow stated. “An audience of elites gathered to cheer on a violent spectacle that culminated in vile, bigoted rhetoric—all occurring while the average American struggles to keep up with the ballooning costs of healthcare and daily essentials.”
Crow, a vocal opponent of Donald Trump, emphasized her frustration with the administration’s priorities: “Do not be misled. This administration is fundamentally corrupt, showing little regard for the welfare of the public. Their focus is solely on self-enrichment, even at the expense of our democratic values. If we continue to accept such diversions from our reality, we are complicit. It is time for America to demand better.”
The event, dubbed “UFC Freedom 250,” coincided with the President’s 80th birthday. The proceedings took a particularly toxic turn during a post-match interview when fighter Josh Hokit chose to target former First Lady Michelle Obama with a hateful, sexist slur. Reports indicate that the remark, which drew a mix of cheers and boos, was met with a brief smile from Trump.
In the aftermath, UFC CEO Dana White attempted to distance the organization from the rhetoric. According to CNN, White reached out to Time magazine to clarify his stance, noting, “I recognize that the Obamas are public figures, but I fundamentally oppose such malicious and fabricated attacks on anyone’s family. While I have always advocated for free speech, I despise this kind of derogatory nonsense.”
Crow’s latest rebuke aligns her with other outspoken artists like Bruce Springsteen, Jack White, and Tom Morello, who have consistently challenged the current administration. Her political advocacy is not new; earlier this year, she demanded accountability regarding the release of the Epstein files, calling for the impeachment and prosecution of any officials—regardless of party affiliation—found to have ties to the late convicted predator.
Reflecting on the broader political climate, Crow has often used her platform to confront what she views as a decline in national ethics. Last summer, she released “The New Normal,” a track that serves as a blistering indictment of the current political environment, warning against the normalization of division and the loss of moral clarity in leadership.
