Selena Gomez is once again proving her commitment to transparency, recently taking to social media to address blunt inquiries regarding her physical appearance and vocal changes with grace and humor.
In a clip from a recent Instagram livestream that quickly gained traction on X (formerly Twitter), the Rare Beauty founder responded to followers who questioned the current sound of her speaking voice. “I’ve encountered this question a few times—the ‘voice thing,'” she remarked before offering a brief explanation. Gomez noted that she occasionally experiences internal swelling in her throat, which alters her vocal quality, though she opted not to dive into further clinical details.
During the same session, the Only Murders in the Building star expressed appreciation for the directness of her audience, stating, “I’m glad y’all are being real with me on the live; I truly appreciate it.”
The conversation took an even more personal turn when Gomez addressed a question about her facial grooming. In a subsequent video shared to her Story, she laughed off a comment asking how she shaves her “mustache.”
“I totally get why you’d ask,” she said with a smile. “But I actually have melasma, everyone. It’s caused by sun exposure.” She used the moment to advocate for skin safety, urging her followers to be diligent with sunscreen. Gomez clarified that while she actively treats the skin condition, the pigmentation remains visible. “It’s not a mustache; it’s just my melasma. That’s just me.”
According to medical experts at the Cleveland Clinic, melasma is a prevalent skin disorder that causes brown or gray-brown patches, typically appearing on the forehead, cheeks, and above the upper lip. The condition is often exacerbated by hormonal shifts and UV radiation.
This level of vulnerability is nothing new for the actress and singer. Gomez has long been a vocal advocate for health awareness, sharing her personal battles with lupus, mental health challenges, and SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth)—a condition that causes significant digestive distress due to an imbalance of bacteria in the small intestine.
Despite these personal hurdles, Gomez is closing out a monumental year. Following her September marriage to producer Benny Blanco, the couple’s collaborative album, I Said I Love You First, climbed to No. 2 on the Billboard 200. Her professional accolades continue to grow as well; she recently earned her fourth consecutive Golden Globe nomination for her lead role in the hit Hulu series.
“Thank you to the Golden Globes for recognizing us after five seasons!” Gomez shared in a heartfelt reaction to the news. “I am deeply grateful and forever honored.”
