Selena Gomez has officially silenced rumors that her brief “lol” comment on an Instagram post featuring Taylor Swift was intended as a slight. The singer-actress took to her Instagram Stories on Friday (June 12) to clarify the misunderstanding after waking up to a flood of messages questioning her intent.
“I would never insult my friends,” Gomez clarified, explaining that her laughter was directed at a different slide within the same post. She further explained the context, noting that she had been playfully ribbing her own friends in a separate group chat regarding a wager on the recent NBA game. “I lost, but I was just poking fun at my opponents. Believe it or not, I do have other friends in my life—a fact people often seem to overlook.”
She concluded her message with a grounded reminder to her followers: “Also… it’s just a basketball game.”
The online speculation began after MTV shared photos of Swift enjoying the New York Knicks vs. San Antonio Spurs game at Madison Square Garden. While some users misread Gomez’s comment as sarcasm, anyone familiar with the two stars’ two-decade-long friendship knows their rapport is built on mutual support, not shade. Swift, for her part, was visibly ecstatic at the game, celebrating the Knicks’ victory with such fervor that she was noticeably hoarse at the 2026 Songwriters Hall of Fame induction ceremony the following day.
“My voice is the product of two things I make no apologies for,” Swift told the audience while accepting her honor. “I was lucky enough to attend the Knicks game last night, and I screamed for the entire duration. I didn’t hold back, and I have no regrets about being that excited.”
