The achievements in Sea of Thieves are all written as riddles, and every has a reputation that’s both a reference to a bit of popular culture or some type of pirate pun. But two stand out: “You Fight Like A Merchant” and “How Appropriate! You Fight Like A Chicken.”
They’re a understanding nod to Secret of Monkey Island’s insult sword preventing system. Back within the day, Guybrush Threepwood, the star of the Monkey Island sequence, needed to complement his sword-fighting expertise with rapier wit. During the pauses in a fencing duel, a combatant would hurl an insult, forcing his opponent to reply in type. The duellist with probably the most barbed insults or comebacks would find yourself gaining a bonus, and three profitable put-downs might guarantee victory.
One such insult couplet was “You fight like a Dairy Farmer,” to which the proper response was “How appropriate! You fight like a cow.” The corresponding Sea of Thieves achievements, appropriately, seem to cope with swordplay.
It’s a pleasant tip of the hat to Secret of Monkey Island, which got here out in 1990. The second recreation within the sequence, Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge, is on our record of the best adventure games of all time. You can try the full achievements list here.
