Sci-Fi Movie Elysium Starring Matt Damon Arrives on Netflix

Matt Damon has built a career playing extraordinary leading men in movies. His performance as Odysseus in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey fits neatly into a decades-long filmography. Projects like Good Will Hunting (1997), The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), and the Bourne series showcase the actor’s range across different moral compasses. Then there is 2011’s Contagion, where Damon plays Mitch Emhoff, an everyman whose ordinary background anchors an anxiety-driven story.

Damon brings that same naturalistic approach to Max Da Costa in Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium (2013). Max is a former car thief on parole who must save Earth. Blomkamp’s film feels like a step down from District 9 (2009) and Chappie (2015), which better utilize his cinéma vérité style. Even so, Elysium benefits from committed performances from Damon and the rest of the cast. Since Elysium landed on Netflix on Aug. 1, audiences can watch the dystopian sci-fi flick.

The film opens in the year 2154 on a polluted, overpopulated Earth. Most humans live in poverty while the ultra-wealthy reside on Elysium, a high-tech orbital space station. Elysium features Med-Bays capable of healing any disease. A hacker named Spider (Wagner Moura) fights the system by smuggling people to the station, drawing the wrath of Defense Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster).

Max is an ex-thief who receives a lethal dose of radiation at work. Although Armadyne Corp provides medication to suppress symptoms, Max has five days left to live. This extreme situation radicalizes him.

When healthcare becomes a luxury, Max abandons his goal of keeping his head down. His survival motive shifts into a mission to dismantle Elysium so others like him can access medical care. Max is not trying to be a traditional hero, and his desperate circumstances force him into difficult choices against vicious enemies.

Elysium explores class division and champions the right to a dignified life. While the film relies on familiar sci-fi themes and surface-level exploration, it remains entertaining thanks to Damon. He delivers a physically demanding performance, donning an exoskeleton to boost his declining health, while bringing a rare vulnerability to his role.

Damon later starred as Dr. Mann in Nolan’s Interstellar (2014), hiding troubling motivations behind a friendly facade. In 2023, he played General Leslie Groves in Oppenheimer. While Damon plays Odysseus in The Odyssey on July 17—with early critical impressions calling it his career-best work—that mythological character contrasts sharply with the grounded Max Da Costa.

Elysium is an engaging adventure supported by Damon, Foster, and Sharlto Copley, who plays Agent M. Kruger. The movie uses kinetic action sequences to deliver a message about wealth inequity.

Elysium may not rank among Damon’s greatest films, but it highlights his ability to make extraordinary circumstances feel human and regular characters feel heroic.
