Scarlett Johansson May Star in “Rapunzel” Remake

Disney has restarted development on a live-action remake of the 2010 animated film “Tangled.”

Deadline reports that Scarlett Johansson has been offered the part of the film’s chief antagonist, Mother Gothel. Michael Gracey (“The Greatest Showman”) is set to direct, and Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (“I Know What You Did Last Summer”) will adapt the screenplay.

Plans for a “Tangled” remake first emerged in 2023; more details were reported then here. This spring media outlets said Disney had reconsidered moving forward with the remake after the underwhelming box-office performance of “Snow White.” Read more.

“Tangled” is inspired by the Brothers Grimm fairy tales and tells the story of a princess with exceptionally long hair. The original film earned $592 million worldwide, and its principal characters were voiced by Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi.
