Rust’s New Force Wipe Update Brings Major Game Changes
The first Thursday of September has arrived, signaling the most anticipated day of the month for the Rust community: the monthly force wipe. Aptly named “Breach and Clear,” this patch focuses heavily on demolishing barriers and breaching fortified loot zones. Alongside more than a hundred quality-of-life adjustments, the update introduces substantial mechanical shifts designed to level the playing field for solo players enduring the relentless onslaught of massive clans and zergs.
Every single wipe cycle, countless players find themselves locked in the primitive tier for days as dominant clans monopolize monuments and hoard blueprints. Survivors are routinely forced to wait until these mega-groups list blueprints in vending machines just to secure a Tier 2 workbench and begin manufacturing viable firearms. To curb this aggressive progression monopoly, Facepunch has introduced physical monument blockers within red keycard puzzle rooms. While some barriers yield to basic melee weapons, others demand the relentless punishment of multiple jackhammers. These obstructions maintain their structural integrity for an entire 24 hours before natural decay sets in. Though this won’t completely halt clan progression, it injects a welcome layer of tactical friction into the opening hours of the wipe.
Tool Cupboard upkeep cost now scales directly with team size
Large groups must now also contend with escalating Tool Cupboard (TC) maintenance costs tied directly to their roster size. Bases housing four players or fewer remain exempt from this tax. However, once a roster hits six members, upkeep surges by 2%, compounding by an additional 4% for every subsequent player beyond that threshold, up to a maximum penalty of 300%. To calculate this overhead accurately, the TC evaluates all currently authorized players as well as anyone granted access via code locks, including guest codes. Furthermore, the system tracks individuals deauthorized within the preceding 24-hour window, effectively neutralizing workarounds designed to dodge the fee. On a positive note, dedicated clan gatherers will find resource management somewhat smoother, as high-quality metal ore nodes and surface harvestables can now be actively shattered to yield valuable HQM ore.
August’s “Power Trip” update fundamentally altered island dynamics by requiring players to activate the Power Plant to restore electrical grids across the map. Deepening the significance of this infrastructure, island-wide electricity is now mandatory for Outpost delivery drones to successfully retrieve and transport items from player-operated storefronts.
While these headline additions anchor September’s patch, a handful of subtle yet impactful tweaks deserve attention. Enthusiasts can examine the comprehensive patch notes via the official September devblog. Standout modifications include:
- The Medical Honey Bandage arrives as a new Tier 1 recovery consumable, offering superior healing compared to standard bandages while falling short of a medical syringe. Crafting requires harvested honey.
- Attack helicopter armor plating now visibly breaks away and detaches as the vehicle absorbs sustained damage.
- Heavy Plate Jackets and Pants now emit audible clanking noises during movement, whereas the Heavy Plate Helmet effectively dampens footstep sounds.
- Certain pie consumption buffs have been amplified alongside general recipe balancing.
- The Large Medkit now successfully cleanses accumulated radiation.
To round things out, the weekly Rust item store has refreshed its inventory with fresh cosmetics. Most notably, the heavily anticipated Crystal Assault Rifle DLC is now available for purchase. This striking, translucent firearm comes in five distinct colorways—diamond, ruby, pink diamond, emerald, and sapphire—and can be acquired on Steam for $6.99.
And the Battle Pass system is no longer on it
