While the world witnessed BTS navigate their two-year mandatory military service in South Korea, the internal toll of that hiatus remained a deeply private experience for the members themselves.
During a candid Weverse livestream on May 28, RM offered a rare glimpse into the group’s collective mindset. Recalling an intimate gathering at Jimin’s residence—which took place as the members cycled through enlistment between late 2022 and mid-2025—RM shared the emotional weight of that period. “When Jin was discharged in June 2024, the morale among all of us was incredibly low,” RM admitted, reflecting on the heavy psychological strain of their separation.
The dinner at Jimin’s home became a pivotal turning point defined by vulnerability and shared tears. RM recounted how the conversation shifted toward the future, with the group leader emphasizing his renewed commitment: “We poured our hearts out, and I realized I needed to work even harder to hold this team together.”
The members also grappled with the immense pressure of meeting the expectations of their devoted fanbase, ARMY, upon their return. RM confessed that the process of creating their comeback album was fueled by a desire to honor the patience of their supporters, stating, “After finishing the album, I felt a deep responsibility to pay back everyone who waited for us.”
The triumphant result was their 2026 chart-topping album, ARIRANG, and a massive global stadium tour set to conclude in 2027. The project saw nearly every track secure a spot on the Billboard Hot 100, including the fan-favorite “Body to Body.” RM revealed that the song originally carried a more suggestive title, “Body on Body,” and a significantly more explicit tone, though they eventually pivoted the narrative toward themes of solidarity and unity.
“It was originally a very sensual track,” he explained. “But we decided that, while we are all in our 30s now—with the exception of Jung Kook—and certainly capable of exploring more mature themes, we shouldn’t lean into sexual content just for the sake of it. Ultimately, it didn’t align with what we needed to express at that moment.”
The group’s recent success continues to mount following their triumphant appearance at the American Music Awards in Las Vegas on May 25, where they secured honors for Artist of the Year, Best Male K-Pop Artist, and Song of the Summer for “SWIM.” Following a high-energy residency at Allegiant Stadium, BTS is currently continuing their ARIRANG World Tour with upcoming performances across South Korea.
