Box office analysts are forecasting a stellar debut for Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil, projecting a global opening weekend haul of $80 million.

The film began its theatrical rollout in major markets this week. This latest adaptation of the iconic video game franchise is expected to rake in between $40 million and $50 million domestically, complemented by an additional $31 million from international territories. These figures position the film to potentially set a new opening weekend record for the franchise, which first launched in 2002.

The story follows a courier (Austin Abrams) who finds himself trapped in Raccoon City at the height of a zombie apocalypse. Warner Bros. invested $75 million into the production of the film. Critics have lauded the new adaptation, awarding it a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 79 out of 100 on Metacritic.
