Report: Baldur’s Gate 2 Remake in Development with Original BioWare Lead Designer Returning

The legendary Baldur’s Gate II is reportedly poised for a modern revival. According to recent reports from PC Gamer, the beloved classic is receiving the remake treatment, with Kevin Martens—a former BioWare lead designer who played a pivotal role in the original title—returning to spearhead the project. Furthermore, industry whispers suggest that the original Baldur’s Gate may also be in line for a similar overhaul.

Martens is currently collaborating with Wizards of the Coast on the highly anticipated sci-fi RPG Exodus, slated for release in early 2027. Given that Wizards of the Coast retains ownership of the Baldur’s Gate intellectual property, this reunion seems a natural progression for the veteran designer. Since his contribution to Exodus is specialized rather than a full-time commitment at Archetype Entertainment, he is well-positioned to steer the return to the Forgotten Realms.

Following the monumental success of Baldur’s Gate 3, which has surpassed 20 million units sold since its 2023 debut, a continuation of the franchise feels inevitable. While Larian Studios, the mastermind behind the third installment, has officially stepped away from the D&D license to focus on their own gruesome new iteration of the Divinity series, this potential remake could serve as the bridge for fans eager to return to the iconic setting.

The Baldur’s Gate brand continues to expand beyond the monitor. HBO’s The Last of Us showrunner, Craig Mazin, is actively developing a television adaptation intended to extend the narrative established in Baldur’s Gate 3. Additionally, literature enthusiasts can look forward to a deep dive into the origin of the game’s most popular vampire, with the prequel novel Baldur’s Gate 3: Astarion arriving this September.
