Red Dead Redemption 2 Gets Shadow of Mordor-Style Nemesis System Where NPCs Remember Player Actions and Seek Revenge

Crimes will have consequences if you don’t wear a mask.

Modders continue to support Red Dead Redemption 2 with mods that expand its gameplay mechanics. A modder who goes by nicklovin99 has now added a nemesis system to the Rockstar Games title, inspired by Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor.

According to nicklovin99, the mod gives every character in the world of Red Dead Redemption 2 a name, a personality, and a mind “shaped by the life they lived before you showed up.” NPCs remember the player’s actions and may react differently when they meet again, for example by becoming afraid or trying to kill the player.

The world of Red Dead Redemption 2 includes various outlaw gangs and the US Army. They go about their business, may come into conflict with each other, go to war, make or break peace, carry out robberies, and choose new leaders. According to the modder, this happens whether or not the player is watching.

The protagonist can interrogate characters to get information and find a boss’s hideout. Destroying a gang’s supplies and personnel affects its combat strength. If the gang is short on resources, its weapons get worse and it cannot start a war.

nicklovin99 also implemented a system that recognizes the protagonist’s identity. If the player wears a mask, a person who did not see the player’s face cannot hold a grudge against them. For example, relatives of a murder victim may try to take revenge.

The mod, called “enRage – Living World and Nemesis System,” is free to download from Nexus Mods. It is in “early access,” and the modder is currently collecting bug reports.
