Activision’s most recent attempt to launch a new subseries was Call of Duty: Vanguard, released in 2021.

Activision has confirmed that the next Call of Duty game, planned for 2027, will start an entirely new subseries of the franchise. It will belong to neither Modern Warfare nor Black Ops. Activision chief marketing officer Tyler Bahl shared the news in an interview with The Game Business.

We’ve already said that one of our future games will start a new subseries, and we’ve already laid the groundwork for it.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23 and is set to close out the latest chapter of the Modern Warfare subseries. It follows Black Ops 7, released in 2025 and the seventh main game in the Black Ops line.

Activision previously announced that it would stop releasing two games in a row within the same subseries. The decision followed negative community reaction to the back-to-back releases of Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3, and of Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7.

We’ve been open about the fact that releasing Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3 back to back, as well as Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7, is not what our community wanted.

According to rumors, the upcoming game takes place in the late 1990s and early 2000s. It is also said to have a new setting and an entirely new cast of characters.
