First Reviews of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 Split Critics, Praising Visuals and Violence but Questioning Story

The first reviewers have already met the new heroes of Night City.

The first full reviews of season 2 of the anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, made by CD Projekt RED and studio TRIGGER, are now online. The sequel does not yet have a score on review aggregators, but most journalists respond to it positively. Critics again praise the striking animation, the brutal action scenes and the expansion of the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, though the quality of the story sparked far more disagreement.

“The ingredients are familiar, sometimes too much so. But a superb ensemble of characters and the relationships between them make this return to Night City richer, more satisfying and simply better.”
Cory Plante, Polygon
“‘Edgerunners 2’ doesn’t feel as significant an event as the first season, but it still delivers an impressive spectacle. As a sci-fi story about the evil of megacorporations, a tale of revenge, and action with stunning fights and striking brutality, the Trigger and CD Projekt RED series gets the job done.”
Rafael Motamayor, IGN
“Dee and Roman’s storyline develops separately from Talia and Wick’s for most of the season, with fairly little overlap between them. But when their paths finally converge in the closing episodes, the long wait pays off. It would have been easy to repeat David’s story, perhaps with a different outcome. However, ‘Edgerunners 2’ deserves praise for refusing to simply reproduce its predecessor’s winning formula.”
Jordan Farley, GamesRadar+
“The story threads are so loosely connected that for more than half the season the narrative wanders aimlessly, resembling several ideas for different anime instead of one cohesive series. Roman, Talia and Dee are in the same solar system, but there is no real gravity between them. At least, I don’t feel it.”
Kenneth Shepard, Kotaku

Season 2 tells a standalone story of revenge and redemption in Night City. It centers on four new characters: Wick Kingsley, a once-celebrated mercenary trying to find a new purpose in life, netrunner Dee, who wants revenge for a destroyed clan, and Roman Karax, a young film buff searching for material for his movie. Their paths cross with Talia Young, a girl from a corporate family who joined the Maelstrom gang and replaced most of her body with implants.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 premieres on Netflix on October 20.
