RAYE Criticizes ‘Nasty’ Amy Winehouse Fans Who Attack Her While Claiming to Defend the Late Icon

RAYE Confronts the Cruelty of Unsolicited Comparisons

RAYE’s ascent in the music industry over the past few years has been nothing short of meteoric. However, this increased visibility has brought with it an influx of intense public scrutiny. Among the various critiques she faces, one persistent and deeply personal narrative involves comparisons to the late Amy Winehouse—a subject RAYE addresses directly in her new track, “I Will Overcome.”

In her expansive cover story for Billboard, published Thursday (May 7), RAYE opened up to writer Hannah Dailey about the inspiration behind the opening song of her March album, This Music May Contain Hope. She candidly addresses those who weaponize the legacy of the British soul-pop icon, who passed away from accidental alcohol poisoning in 2011, to disparage her own artistry. On the track, she poignantly writes: “Some people say I remind them of Amy/ Some spit through their keyboards, I’ll never amount/ And the evil in insults, the arrows from your tongue/ [Are] the same devils you tortured her with.”

“It strikes me as profoundly ironic—and darkly amusing—that someone would attempt to ‘defend’ Amy by tearing me down in the most vitriolic, hateful way possible,” RAYE explained during the interview. “What these people are doing to me is essentially a microcosm of what Amy endured. She was relentlessly berated and dismantled by the media, the public, and society at large.”

She added, “It is perfectly acceptable to dislike my music. That’s subjective. But the sheer malice and cruelty behind some of these comments is jarring. It mirrors the very toxicity Amy faced. I felt compelled to address it because, while I receive so much genuine love and support, the negativity has a way of resonating more loudly.”

This Music May Contain Hope has already proven to be a milestone, debuting at No. 11 on the Billboard 200 and topping the charts in the U.K. — marking RAYE’s first album to achieve the latter. This accomplishment follows a grueling, years-long struggle to establish her footing as an independent artist following her departure from Polydor Records in 2021.

Beyond the comparisons, the cover feature explores RAYE’s candid reflections on her mental health, her journey through personal trauma, and her path toward healing. She also discusses her evolving perspective on love and dating, fueled by the success of her hit single, “Where Is My Husband!,” which recently peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100.

“It’s been so long since I’ve dated that the prospect feels completely foreign,” she admitted. “There are days when I feel entirely secure and content, and then there are moments when I’m watching a romantic comedy and I just wonder, ‘Where is it? Where is that connection?’ But I don’t take it too seriously. I’m not losing sleep over it—or at least, not every night.”
