For longtime film buffs, the prospect of David Fincher helming a Quentin Tarantino project sounds like the kind of wild, internet-era fever dream that once dominated forums like Ain’t It Cool News. Yet, impossibly, this collaboration is happening—and it’s destined for the giant screen.

Netflix confirmed on Wednesday that The Adventures of Cliff Booth, a spiritual follow-up to Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood directed by Fincher, will debut with an exclusive two-week engagement in IMAX theaters starting November 25, followed by a streaming premiere on December 23. Brad Pitt reprises his role as the enigmatic stuntman, but the setting has shifted to the grittier, disillusioned landscape of 1977, a sharp departure from the vibrant, golden-hued nostalgia of 1969.

The film boasts a powerhouse ensemble cast, including Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, Carla Gugino, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Peter Weller, and Anora breakout star Karren Karagulian. Behind the lens, Fincher has reunited with his trusted collaborators, including cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt—celebrated for his work on Mank and The Killer—and production designer Donald Graham Burt, ensuring a seamless visual transition from the original film.

It remains a surreal pairing. Tarantino and Fincher stand as two of the most influential directors of the modern era, yet they occupy vastly different stylistic universes. Tarantino is defined by his rapid-fire dialogue and pulpy, celluloid-drenched narratives, whereas Fincher is a meticulous perfectionist renowned for his clinical precision and digital aesthetic. The question remains: how will these two distinct creative forces blend?

There is plenty of reason for optimism. Fincher has previously demonstrated an uncanny ability to elevate the work of iconic writers, most notably during his partnership with Aaron Sorkin on The Social Network. Furthermore, while Tarantino is often viewed as a dominant creative force, he has historically been open to collaboration, famously trusting director Tony Scott with his script for True Romance. Based on the Super Bowl teaser released last February, it is clear that Fincher has preserved the distinct “Tarantino-esque” flavor of the material. The Adventures of Cliff Booth is shaping up to be an unexpectedly brilliant blend of tastes.

The unique IMAX strategy is a fascinating byproduct of Hollywood’s shifting schedule. The premium screens were originally earmarked for Greta Gerwig’s Narnia adaptation before it moved to 2027, creating a perfect gap in the calendar. While major blockbusters like Dune 3 and Avengers: Doomsday battle for large-format dominance this winter, Thanksgiving belongs to the gritty, star-studded vision of Pitt, Fincher, and Tarantino. It is an arrangement that works perfectly.
